Guru Purnima, also known as Vyasa Purnima, is a significant day observed on the full moon of the Ashadha month. This day is dedicated to honoring one's Guru, the spiritual teacher who leads disciples on their path to enlightenment. On this occasion, disciples traditionally offer Puja or pay respects to their Gurus, recognizing their vital role in imparting wisdom and spiritual guidance.
Guru Purnima is also referred to as Vyasa Purnima because it commemorates the birth anniversary of Sage Veda Vyasa, the revered author of the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. Sage Vyasa’s contributions to Hindu scriptures are profound, and this day celebrates his life, wisdom, and teachings.
In 2024, Guru Purnima will be celebrated on Sunday, July 21. The Purnima tithi begins at 5:57 AM and concludes at 7:09 PM on the same day. However, the Purnima tithi extends from 6:00 PM on July 20 to 3:47 PM on July 21.
On Guru Purnima, Hindus engage in various rituals to honor their Gurus. Devotees chant mantras, sing devotional songs, and recite hymns throughout the day. The Guru Gita, a sacred scripture dedicated to the Guru, is recited, and offerings such as flowers, gifts, and Prasad (charanamritha) are made to the Gurus.
In certain ashrams, a special sandalwood Puja is performed, dedicated to Sage Veda Vyasa. Many disciples visit their spiritual teachers on this day to reaffirm their commitment to their spiritual path and to pay homage to the teachings they have received.
